You are not alone. I ran into this the first time I jumped in mom-in-law's 650. I would have been tazed before I got it out of the garage.

Ha, I'd been shopping 5ers for about a month. Ended up with an 07, which was the last year of the more-standard shifter. Definitely prefer it.

I had a sinilar experience in an X5. Get in, start car, reach for shifter and contemplate life.

We had a Prius and Lexus CT on the lot and they're similarly confusing at first. "Hey, remember everything you know about conventional automatic shift levers? Good, now throw it all out."

How do you like it? I've been considering a 5er when my E46 gives up running. Hopefully I can find a 535i with the sport package.

Well, I've had it about a week, now. Signed the papers last Tuesday . I'd made the mistake of driving one early on in my search, and went through a ton of them before settling on this one. It's like buying a house with wheels, with really expensive tires. Too many of them have been beat to shit, or just haven't held up in the TX heat. This one, though, was obviously well-cared for, and garaged. No headlight cataracts, no leaks, and the rubber around all the glass looks brand fuckin new.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I looked at 528s, mostly. Really didn't want a used turbo anything, so the 35s were right out. One of the first that I drove was a 550, which I'd pretty much ruled out as too expensive and not worth it. Then I found this one mistakenly listed for too much less than it was worth to pass up. The V8 is very, very thirsty. Driving an auto is taking me a lot to get used to, but I just have to remind myself to drive it like a Suburban.

After 8 years in a 4-cyl, mid-engined convertible that weighs less than a Miata, it's a very big change. But the thing has some SERIOUS balls, and I enjoy it more than I like to admit. It's a fuckin beast.

Good to know. I had ruled out 550's because I've got a 80 mile round-trip commute each day and wanted to avoid getting to know my local gas station attendant by name.

The 550i is amazing although I am biased from having a few in the family. It is definitely a thirsty motor but if you pay attention you can get a mpg that isn't abysmal. The biggest problem was tires and rims, it is inevitable that the rear wheels will get absolutely chewed up and when you hit a pothole the rims will crack. My father went through 3 rims and 4 sets of tires on one car alone. I think it is because of him that BMW's tire insurance has a cap limit now. It doesn't help that a bunch of them go for cheap now because who could resist a V-8 4 door with leather and sometimes heated seats? It is a really nice package if you can stomach the maintenance costs.

It's stop-and go driving that really kills it. If it's a lot of freeway it might not be all that different from the 6 cyls, which have a really hard time getting out of their own way.

Well, that's how I ended up with it. Someone else paid all the terrible depreciation, and I ended up with a whole lotta car for barely more than I paid for my bare-bones MR2.

Oh man, I drove my buddy's mom's X5 a few weeks ago. What a fucking nightmare. My buddy engaged the parking brake while we were sitting at a light, and sat there for like 2 minutes after it turned green trying to figure out how to turn it off.

I worked at a BMW dealership. The first time I drove one of these I was literally sitting there for a good minute or two before my boss comes over to show me how to drive it. What's even worse is that I was 16 at the time. So much for kids being great with current tech.

Plot twist: You really shift into reverse using a button mounted inside the glove compartment. The Gearstick Reverse Actuation, or GRA for short, is a $10,500 optional extra.

my dad rented a Ford Falcon a few years back and as you do when in a new car we were poking at everything as we drove along. Oh, what's this odd little unmarked button in the glovebox *press* *SPROING* oh, that'd be the boot/trunk release... on the highway
